In 2009 June, Orewa College was involved in a fatal boiler explosion that took the life of their caretaker, Richard Nel. A contractor was also involved, suffering severe head injuries.[2] The board was charged under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992's section 6 and section 16. They pleaded guilty against all charges at the court-case on April 2010.[3]
